The Art of ListeningHow to increase Affinity in any conversation.
The three levels of listening will be taught with eye opening results. Most of us have heard the saying, “You have 2 ears and 1 mouth so let your ears do twice the work." Sadly, we chuckle at this statement, but continue to use the mouth two times as much or greater. Learning the levels of listening will help the student to take heed and let the ears take over. The three levels will be taught in their simplistic nature and then further teaching and discussion will reveal deeper insight into each level. The student will be taught how to move through the levels and what to do to increase affinity when caught in Level 1 and 2. Level One: The listener is consumed with thought while being spoken to and does not hear the message. This usually results in some form of these questions: “Are you listening to me?” “Can you repeat what you said, I did not hear you?” “Are you talking to me?” Level One listening creates a gap! Level Two: The listener is paying attention to the message and thinking of what to say next, with the result of hearing a percentage or all of the words. This is a volley type of conversation. Level Two listening allows for some camaraderie and may or may not cause a gap. It can also begin to bridge a gap! Level Three: The listener hears every word and feels the emotion behind the words allowing for deeper and more intimate conversation. This results in the speaker feeling cared for and worthy of the conversation. Level Three listening creates “Affinity!" |
